Teraquant has partnered with Malden Electronics, Ltd. of the UK to distribute and support Malden’s high-quality voice quality test solutions in the USA and Canada. Malden Electronics have been measuring speech for over twenty years and are used by over 175 different companies worldwide. Their customers represent the global leaders in voice communications products, services and networks.

Malden Electronics produces the most accurate measurement and most comprehensive implementation objective voice quality assessment of PESQ (ITU-T Recommendation P.862) and the only implementation of POLQA®, the newest standard for evaluating speech quality (ITU_T P.863) available in the world today. They also provice the most accurate measurement of one way delay for the voice path available in the world today.

Malden launches POLQA standard on MultiDSLA Speech Quality Tool

Malden is pleased to announce that POLQA®, the newest standard for evaluating speech quality (ITU_T P.863), is now available on their MultiDSLA speech performance analysis tool.

Sill providing PESQ scoring, the MultiDSLA can now include support for the ITU-T Rec. P.863 POLQA® algorithm which has been developed to deal with some of the weaknesses inherent in PESQ.

You should be considering testing with POLQA® if you:

  • Are using either wideband or super-wideband codecs.
  • Use codecs that employ time-warping.
  • Work with CDMA terminals and/or networks.
  • Have a network that uses AMR codecs.
  • Test through acoustic interfaces.
  • Are concerned about voice quality enhancement and noise reduction devices/processes.

POLQA Graph

The principle is similar to PESQ – comparing the clean reference file with the degraded file from the network - but the test methodology is different. POLQA® has two models, one for Narrowband and one for Super-wideband. The Super-wideband model can be used for any network. The Narrowband model provides compatibility with PESQ NB and narrowband subjective test data.

MultiDSLA makes it easy to use POLQA®. Malden's long experience in the application of speech quality metrics ensures that you will be getting useful results as soon as the option is enabled on your MultiDSLA system.

Why is accuracy important?

  1. Accuracy avoids the cost of chasing and repairing a problem which has no impact on quality or user experience.
  2. Accuracy allows you to pin-point the real cause of bottlenecks in your system.
  3. Accuracy prevents you from failing a good product.

Test Applications

network diagram

Device Testing

  • Voice Codec performance
  • Compare different algorithms and implementations
  • Bandwidth required to achieve a given level of voice quality
  • Packet Loss Concealment mechanisms
  • Determine capacity of devices such as gateways sharing DSP resources between voice streams

Network Test and Monitoring

  • Isolate network elements contributing to poor voice quality
  • Baseline current voice quality to set realistic goals for VoIP migration
  • Monitor voice SLA's
  • Provide objective acceptance criteria
  • Eliminate good networks from bad networks

Devices to be Tested

  • Handsets and Mobiles for cellular, WiFi and VoIP
  • VoIP gateways
  • Any device with a voice codec or Transcoder
